Drug of Choice

Sleek Showstoppers interior

It’s Superdrug’s 50th birthday and Lauren Oakey is made up

On a Saturday in my home town, everyone went to Superdrug. It’s where I discovered that mascara came in colours other than ‘clear’ and where grubby-bus-money fingers were jabbed into blushers then swept onto cheeks in a rainbow of colours that could withstand some extended Macarena action at a weekend disco. Superdrug, home to those face masks sachets that were applied like a gel and then satisfyingly peeled off like sunburnt skin, home to Impulse and Charlie Red liberally spritzed on for no occasion more special than sitting on a bench and sharing a bag of chips. The chemist down the road was where your nan bought her pop socks and talc. Superdrug was like the cool older cousin who painted your nails with glitter and crimped your hair whilst letting you have a bit of her Hooch and the end of a B&H.

And now that cool cousin is 50 years old. To mark this milestone, Superdrug has launched a range of limited editions from over 30 of their bestselling brands. Each product has been repackaged in Superdrug’s iconic pink and includes Lipcote, £3.69; classic Astral cream, £1.94; and a Carmex Lip Balm Pot, £2.90. Then there’s an eyeshadow palette from the awesome Sleek, which I’ve loved since becoming a make-up artist. It’s packed with highly pigmented and super-wearable colours for a bargainous £6.99. There’s also Barry M, one of my favourite drug store brands for its Nail Paints, lip liners and excellent dual sharpener.

So get involved and grab yourself a birthday treat. I’m afraid you’ll have to race me to those Sleek palettes, though.
