Beauty Advent Calendars 2016

Debra Brock sees what’s behind the square window

I know, I know – it’s only October, the clocks haven’t gone back yet and the heating’s still off. But this year’s crop of beauty advent calendars are beginning to turn up in store and I’m on week five of my kitchen refit and still washing up in the downstairs loo sink, so I need pretty things to look at. If you fancy a small beauty treat every day in December, the choice of calendars is bigger than ever this year. So let’s take a sleigh ride through what’s on offer for those of us who need daily festive gratification, starting at the more modestly priced and ploughing through to wild extravagance.

9025971716126Superdrug are offering a range of calendars, including one from really ace budget make-up brand Makeup Revolution at £30. They’ve also got a Tanya Burr set (twelve days of gifts) for £15 which would be perfect for a teenage beauty fan. If you’re a Boots No7 enthusiast, they’ve also put together a collection of lipstick, skincare and nail polishes for £39. You can find more details here. They’ll also be stocking calendars from Jack Wills (£35), Sanctuary (£25) and NYX (£60).

Kings of gorgeous scent Rituals (their reed diffusers are amazing) are also offering a 24 gift calendar for the first time this year, with mini versions of their lovely shower foam, oils and creams. It’s £49.50 and will be available from this month.

ms-calendar_detail-resizeLast year’s stand out star from the High Street for our forum members was from Marks and Spencer. M&S Beauty has been completely revitalised in recent years and now sells (in selected stores and online) a really brilliantly curated set of brands which are reflected in the choices for their calendar. It costs £35 and is only available to buy along with other purchases totalling £35 in Beauty, Clothing and Home, but I reckon we can all find a couple of gifts for other people (*cough* ourselves) that will get us up to that total. Out on 10th November, this one will sell fast, so make a note in your diaries.

236408450From the more luxe end of the spectrum then, Charlotte Tilbury is again doing a twelve day calendar of mini treats, £150, (I suppose you could open a drawer every other day, but you’ve got way more self-restraint than me if you pull that off). It’ll be available from Selfridges and Charlotte’s boutiques and website. I’m desperately trying to find justification for buying Molton Brown’s Scented Luxuries calendar (£150), which looks like a really nicely packaged selection of their scented body products, candles and shampoo. Yum. I’m also loving the look of the Clarins calendar at £95 (available here) – this contains a really good spread of products that you know will be great quality.

The Liberty calendar is beautiful every year. Gorgeous selection of high end brands and a fantastic beautifully designed and sturdy  box that could be reused for many years to come with your own gifts inside (at least that’s how I justified it to myself two years ago). It’s £149 and due out later this month.

342-2000170-xm16advent_mjo-malone-london-christmas-collection-advent-calendar_resizeAnd finally for fans of a luxe fragrance who are prepared to go all out on budget, both Diptyque and  Jo Malone have calendars again this year. The Diptyque calendar is £250 and contains a selection of mini candles and fragrances plus some skincare. And Jo Malone has the most beautiful town house calendar with scents and mini candles at £280, available soon from Harrods. Get in quick – despite the high end price, these will probably disappear like a flash.
